Koinly vs CoinLedger for Kraken Users (2026)

Koinly vs CoinLedger for Kraken traders: Kraken import, 2026 US prices and transaction limits, free previews, Form 8949 and TurboTax export, staking and DeFi.

If most of your crypto activity happens on Kraken, your tax software mainly needs to do three things well: pull in your full Kraken history, classify trades and staking rewards correctly, and produce IRS-ready forms. Koinly and CoinLedger are two common options for US filers, and on paper they are closely matched.

This guide compares them on the points that matter to Kraken users: how each imports Kraken data, current US pricing and transaction limits, what you can see for free, tax form exports, and staking support. Prices were checked on each vendor’s own pricing page in September 2026. Prices change, so confirm before you buy.

Importing your Kraken history

Koinly. Its Kraken integration page lists an API connection (recommended) and CSV upload, and notes Kraken offers single sign-on with Koinly. For the API, you create a Kraken key under Settings > Connections & API with query and export permissions, then paste it into Koinly.

CoinLedger. Its Kraken integration page offers a read-only API key (Query Funds, Query Open Orders & Trades, Query Closed Orders & Trades, Query Ledger Entries) or CSV. Per that page, the API import covers spot, staking and margin trades; the CSV route covers spot and staking but not margin.

CSV with either tool. Kraken exports are created from the Documents page: Create Export, choose Ledgers, set dates, choose CSV (Kraken Support). Kraken says exports can take from minutes up to a week, so start early in tax season.

Takeaway: both support a read-only API connection, which saves re-exporting files. If you trade margin and prefer CSV, note CoinLedger’s stated CSV limitation and use its API route instead.

Pricing and transaction limits

The two vendors use nearly identical price points:

  • Koinly (pricing): Newbie $49 (100 transactions), Hodler $99 (1,000), Trader from $199 (3,000+), priced per tax year. Additional transactions can be bought above Trader, up to 100,000 on regular accounts. All paid plans list Form 8949, Schedule D and audit reports.
  • CoinLedger (pricing): Hobbyist $49 (100), Investor $99 (1,000), Pro $199+ (3,000+). All paid plans list Form 8949, income and capital gains reports, and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

A “transaction” is usually each line of activity: a trade, deposit, withdrawal or reward. Kraken staking can add many small reward entries over a year, so count your ledger rows, not just your trades, before choosing a tier.

Free previews

You don’t have to pay to see your numbers:

  • Koinly has a free plan with unlimited wallets and exchanges that shows your capital gains before you buy (Koinly).
  • CoinLedger has free portfolio tracking that imports your history and shows net capital gains and losses (CoinLedger).

So you can import Kraken into both, compare totals, and pay only for the one whose output you can reconcile most easily.

Staking

Kraken staking rewards are generally ordinary income when you gain control of them, under IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14 (details in our Kraken staking tax guide). Koinly lists staking, mining, lending and airdrop support (Koinly); CoinLedger states its Kraken API and CSV imports both handle staking (CoinLedger). If you also use on-chain wallets, connect them during the free preview and check the imported activity looks complete before paying.

Which to pick, by transaction count

  • Under 100 transactions: both are $49. Preview in both, then choose by the tax software you file with. CoinLedger lists direct H&R Block and TaxSlayer integrations.
  • 100 to 1,000: where many Kraken stakers land. Both are $99. CoinLedger lists a 14-day money-back guarantee.
  • 1,000 to 3,000+: both start at $199 and sell extra capacity. Margin traders using CoinLedger should use the API import.
  • Very high volume: Koinly states support up to 100,000 transactions on regular accounts; check both pricing pages for your volume.

Either way, the tiebreaker is simple: import into both free tiers and buy the one whose report matches your Kraken ledger most cleanly.
