The full guide
Not tax advice. This page summarizes IRS instructions and Binance.US’s own help pages as of October 1, 2026. Binance.US may change its process before forms go out. Check with a tax professional for your situation.
Short version: Binance.US sends a Form 1099-DA if you sold, exchanged or spent digital assets, whatever the amount, and a 1099-MISC for staking or referral income above the threshold. Brokers send Form 1099-DA “to you and the IRS” (IRS). The practical traps on Binance.US are the export limits: history reports can’t span more than 12 months, so getting your full record (and the basis it holds) takes a few exports.
What Binance.US sends you
From Binance.US: 1099 Tax Forms FAQ:
| Form | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-DA | You sold, exchanged or spent digital assets | “There is no minimum dollar threshold for 1099-DA. Any qualifying transaction may trigger issuance.” |
| 1099-MISC | $600 or more from eligible income such as staking or referral rewards | “For the 2026 tax filing year and beyond, the reporting threshold increases to $2,000” |
| 1099-K | Not issued | Binance.US decided “not to issue Forms 1099-K for customers on the exchange for the tax year 2021 and beyond” (Binance.US) |
Forms are typically available before mid-February. If you only bought and held, you won’t get a 1099-DA (Binance.US blog).
Download the 1099-DA
From Binance.US: How to download tax forms and the FAQ above:
- Web: log in, hover over your email in the top-right corner, select Export Reports, then Tax Reports, choose the year and the form type (1099-MISC or 1099-DA). The web lets you choose PDF or CSV.
- Mobile: Profile icon > Reports > Tax Reports > year and form type. The app gives PDF only.
Binance.US mentions “a download limit of 6 tax reports per month,” so don’t regenerate the same form repeatedly.
Export your full history (12 months at a time)
The 1099-DA shows proceeds. The basis for each sale is in your buy history, which you export as custom reports (Binance.US: How to download your transaction history):
- Web: hover over your name, top right, and click Export Reports. Mobile: Profile > Reports > Custom Reports.
- Set Transaction Type to All. Binance.US says that’s how to make sure every transaction appears; the types include Spot Trading, Buy/Sell/Convert, Deposits & Withdraw, Distributions (airdrops and staking rewards), OTC and Pay.
- Pick a date range and CSV, then generate.
The limits: custom date ranges “must not exceed a 12-month period,” a report “may take up to 24 hours to generate,” and you can make “a maximum of 10 custom reports per account per month.” If you’ve used Binance.US for several years, plan one export per year and spread them out. FIFO needs your oldest buys, so start from your first year, not this one.
Why the 1099-DA won’t match your history
Binance.US explains that the 1099-DA “reflects qualifying digital asset dispositions,” while transaction history reports “include broader trading activity,” such as deposits and withdrawals. To compare them, use the same date range and the same transaction categories (Binance.US FAQ).
Stablecoins can also explain a gap. Under the IRS optional method, a broker doesn’t have to report designated sales of qualifying stablecoins if your total from them is $10,000 or less for the year (IRS, Instructions for Form 1099-DA). You still report them.
Where cost basis can be blank
Binance.US’s help pages (checked Oct 1, 2026) don’t say how it reports cost basis on the 1099-DA, and describe no way to enter basis for coins you deposited. The IRS rule decides it: from sales after 2025, brokers report basis for covered digital assets, acquired after 2025 in the broker’s custodial account and held there until the sale (IRS i1099da). Coins bought before 2026, or deposited from another exchange or wallet, are noncovered, and the broker isn’t required to report their basis. The record of what you paid for deposited coins is in the export from the place you bought them.
Filling in Form 8949
Form 8949 has digital-asset boxes (IRS, Instructions for Form 8949):
| Your 1099-DA row | Held 1 year or less | Held more than 1 year | Column (e), basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basis reported to the IRS | G | J | The basis shown. Corrections go in (g) with code B |
| Basis not reported (noncovered) | H | K | Your correct basis |
| No 1099-DA for the sale | I | L | Your correct basis |
Column (d) is the proceeds on the form, net of transaction costs (IRS i1099da, box 1f). For a sale reported without basis, enter “the correct basis of the property in column (e)” (IRS i8949).
